Three ways the Dutch are rethinking traffic

Yes yes, I can hear you thinking on the other end of that internet signal “The Dutch are rethinking traffic? Surely they’re still stuck in the era of canals and mass-cycling?”

INSPIRATION! Cut of your ear.

Yeah, that’s the Netherlands allright

 

But no people, these stereotypes are antiquated, not only have we entertained ourselves the past couple of years with some trafficjams and high-speed train projects seriously gone wrong. The Dutch are now truly rocking the traffic and smart cities scene with innovative and even beautiful projects. Here are three ways the Dutch are shaping and rethinking the future of their trafficking ways:

 

Roosegaarde’s beautiful and functioning projects

This first segment is solely dedicated to the fruit of the work of one talented artist and his hardworking team: Studio Roosegaarde. How often haven’t concrete and asphalt been a straight pain in the eyes? And then there’s this:

Yeah awesome highway there, this project is called the Future Highway. It was about time someone did something innovative to this near ancient concepts of roads. There are several other beautiful projects by Daan Roosegaarde and his team. All of them by now internationally praised.


Rainbow Station connects the historic Amsterdam Central Station with astronomy science to create a site specific rainbow of light. Together with the University of Leiden, Roosegaarde unravels light efficiently into a spectrum of colours. Via new liquid crystal technology which is developed for research on exoplanets, Rainbow Station takes the exact shape of the 125 year old historic station roof.

It shows that with some effort and a lot of creativity you can turn roads and other stuff, which are usually just obstacles in the way of a good vista, into projects of art that can also be thoroughly enjoyed when driving on it.

And yes, this work is the most beautiful in my opinion. The recent Van Gogh-Roosegaarde bicycle path is made of thousands twinkling stones inspired by ‘Starry Night’. The path combines innovation with cultural heritage in the city of Neunen, the place where Van Gogh lived in 1883. And thus nicely combining Van Gogh and cycling in one piece of art.

Speaking of the Dutch art of cycling…

 

The Dutch and the future of cycling

This cliché is of course heavily covered at DutchReview, the Dutch simply love cycling and we’re not letting this hobby/way of life slip away. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Dutch are also at the forefront of cycling innovation. For example there’s the biggest cycling station of the world being built at Utrecht Central station, in many Dutch cities parking your bike has become way more problematic than parking your car.

The bicycle parking station at the brand new (and beautiful!) Rotterdam central station even has a counter showing you how many spots are available and where – no more looking around for precious moments when looking for a spot.

Guess this simple solution also counts as Smart cities. But we still need these kick-ass Japanese underground bicycle parking things:

 

Then there’s the bicycle fastlanes being developed which will get people as fast as possible from A to B while on bike. There’s also smart cycling. And then there’s this special cycling roundabouts which is only explained by these pictures:

Yes, the pics above are from the suspended bicycle path round-about the Hovenring near Eindhoven. It’s so nicely looking (or totally crazy when you remember it’s a cycling round about) that it’s also featured on CNN and the likes, together with the Van Gogh path and the world’s first solar cycling lane.

So, that’s artsy stuff and cycling. How about actual traffic?

 

The Netherlands and Smart Mobility

The Dutch are amping up their smart mobility game in order for their EU presidency in 2016. With the Netherlands being such a tiny and flat nation it is an ideal testing ground for dozens of new traffic related technologies, being a trading nation the Dutch are also hoping for some quality economic side-effects. And surprisingly the Western part of the Netherlands is finally not in the forefront with this development and the southern province of Brabant (actually North-Brabant) is actually leading the race with the little city of Helmond being the Las Vegas of mobility innovation (funny fact: Helmond means Hell’s mouth in Dutch, usually not a good omen)

To name just a few projects:


This movie shows testing on Platooning, the art of getting trucks in a self driving autonomous convoy on Dutch highways is set to save millions of gas money and make the transport sector way more efficient.

 


This one shows the promise of the ITS corridor. Stretching from Austria, through Germany, and the Netherlands the ITS corridor is aiming to actually have you experience some of that goodness from the future. Cooperative technology will help drivers seek an alternative route in good time or slow down, which not only boosts safety but also the flow of traffic. No more traffic jams!

Bonus-project: The Dutch Wind Wheel

Although not a traffic thing. I just had to include the concept of the Dutch Wind Wheel. I mean look at it, that stuff is what you expect from Dubai or Middle Earth – not the Netherlands. It will feature 72 apartments, generate electricity and, obviously,way more touristic attention for Rotterdam. So I guess the Dutch are finally moving away from the tradiotional canals huh?

 

I also wanted to feature the innovativeness of the Dutch and the railroads. Sadly that entry was heavily delayed ; ) . You thought that joke was bad? Follow me at @AbuzerVL for even worse ones

Three Ways the Dutch are Innovating with Renewable Energy

A month ago I wrote this entry about how the Dutch were rethinking traffic. It had it all, art/cycling and smart solutions to old problems. And that’s just what the Dutch energy sector needs as well. Because if you came here for solely a ‘goednieuwsverhaal’ than you’re in the wrong place. How the Dutch are playing their energy game right now is in desperate need of some rethinking.

First, there’s our national flagship of oilinterest, Shell, which makes a lot of money (not a bad thing!) by plundering the worlds fossil fuel reserves. Yeah, someone has to do it, I know. But I bet the people in Nigeria and Alaska wouldn’t mind some innovative energy policies.
And then there’s Groningen. The residents of our Nothern province will be at least very happy if the country could be less reliant on natural gas. The province has been suffering with increasingly powerful earthquakes caused by gas extraction in the last few years.

So what are these developments the Dutch might vest their hopes on when it comes to new sources of energy in this brave new world?

Servers as Energy

Are you reading this article on a laptop or desktop? Touch that thing, just do it. Chances are that it’s kinda hot at places and yes you guessed correctly – that’s just energy streaming away and doing nothing. At long last a Dutch company has found a way to utilize this potential source of energy.

Nerdalize

How does it work? By placing high performance servers in homes Nerdalize creates a distributed compute cloud without the overhead cost of conventional cloud (The company has ‘nerd’ in their name, and yes sir they’re delivering). This creates a triple-win where sustainable computing power becomes an affordable commodity, homes are heated for free and emissions are drastically reduced!

This cost advantage allows to offer computing power that is more affordable than major cloud-providers whilst giving incredible performance (and why yes, I write this in order to get one of these free Nerdalize powerthings, hook me up!). I’m just loving this recycling of power, makes you think that smartphones in the future should just power themselves whenever they’re near a server or a computer solving my foremost #firstworldproblem.

It’s done on a bigger scale as well. The Dutch intercompany BIT uses the residual heat from their server room to heat their building. Makes you think that in the future lots of buildings could and should be warmed by their constantly running server rooms.

Land of Solarpower

For a country with barely 72-hours of sunshine per summer the Dutch sure have got their stuff right when it comes to solarpower as a source of renewable energy. But we all saw Back to the Future somewhere in the 80s or 90s and thought that this future of Marty McFly was never gonna happen in our lifetimes. And indeed, I’m still not hooverboarding to work.

But Dutch artist/scientist Pauline van Dongen just brought that future a little bit closer. A new shirt designed in the Netherlands with 120 solar cells built into it promises to recharge a smartphone in a matter of hours. In bright sunlight, the shirt generates approximately one watt of electricity, which can charge a typical phone over several hours. The solar cells are cheaply mass produced, and can be ironed onto the fabric before it is stitched into a final product. If no rechargeable device is connected to the shirt, the clothing item can store power in its own battery pack. Pretty sweet huh?

Furthermore it also seems that the Dutch solar bicycle path (besides being typically Dutch) is a succes! It even made CNN which makes us Dutchies always very proud:

And there’s more solar innovation. Dutch tech universities are constantly winning solar-powered car contests. And the smart people at TUE Eindhoven have come up with this solar powered family car. And then there’s this floating solar power panel farm (I’m secretly also a fan of nuclear energy, where’s the innovation on that front Holland?!)

The Dutch Windwheel

If there’s one thing I’m truly a fan of in the realm of renewable energy it’s the Dutch Windwheel! “The what now?” I can hear you thinking. Well perhaps these pictures can get you a better image:

It’s a real thing as well. This machine/building/giant wheel should be up and running before 2025 in Rotterdam (here and here for more good stuff in Rotterdam). In my humble opinion the city of innovation in the Netherlands right now and if there’s any place for big and new buildings in the Netherlands it’s here.

So what is it actually? You know, besides a big wheel.

The Dutch Windwheel is supposedly a sustainable icon for the future. It is both figuratively and literally a vehicle for technical and technological innovations and it’s marked to be the most innovative ‘windmill’ in the world (title for extremest one goes to this one from 1930’s Germany) and the showcase for Dutch clean technology. The idea behind it is also that the whole city and its surrounding area will benefit from the boost in tourism and the Netherlands benefits from the iconic showcase for technical and technological innovations.

One of the innovations that can be developed with the Wheel is the EWICON ( Electrostatic WInd energy CONverter) technology. This pioneering wind turbine converts wind energy with a framework of steel tubes into electricity without moving mechanical parts. Result: less wear, lower maintenance costs and no noise or moving shadow. Moreover, the Dutch Windwheel is designed for disassembly and re-use and built with materials from the Rotterdam region, the harbour and the surrounding steel industry.

In short, I reckon the best thing of the windwheel is that it doesn’t just get powered on renewable energy but is also seriously looking super slick. Nice job!

Three Marvelous Innovations in the Smart City of Rotterdam

Once the largest port of the whole world, Rotterdam is now reinventing itself as an innovative and up-and-coming hotspot of Western Europe. You couldn’t have missed awesome buildings like the Markthal, the massive ‘De Rotterdam‘ and its grand futuristic Central Station. Buildings like these are only part of the vibe that propelled Rotterdam to the top of listicles by the likes of the Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide.

But as so often it’s the little gems that make all the difference, and there are three brilliant innovative initiatives (that’s a lot of tives) which really excite me. Why you ask? Since these developments are productive, intelligent and last but not least: really easy on the eyes, thereby bringing the fulfillment of the vague and fabulous promise of a true Smart City a little bit closer.

So what are these projects that popped up in the Smart City of Rotterdam?

 

The Smog Free Project

Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde (I love his stuff and he’s featured here and here) and his teamhave created the world’s largest smog vacuum cleaner. Being a large industrial city Rotterdam could use one as well. This ‘Smog Free Tower uses patented ion technology to produce smog-free bubbles of public space, allowing people to breathe and experience clean air for free.

The compressed smog (or filth if you will) is consequently turned into jewelry like cuff links and rings. This is done through a process of what can be only described as wizardry or magic (or probably some smart engineering, I’m an alpha not beta guy).
The Smog Free Project is not only intended to be a nice hipster and clean air project, but also a sensory experience of a clean future. And as with everything innovative nowadays, it has been kickstarted – crowdsourced and public-privately built. Can’t wait for Roosegaarde’s next project!

 

Rif010 – The Man Made Wave.

Speaking of new public initiatives, the municipality of Rotterdam decided to invest 2,5 million in a ‘city-initiative’ to brighten the place up (and because fighting poverty and stuff like that is boring sometimes). The idea was that an election should take place between a bunch of civilian initiatives, all Rotterdam’s citizens were invited to cast their vote, and in 2014 the awesome concept of Rif010 won!

An installation will be built in the Steigersgracht (great Dutch word for foreigners) which will produce great, barrel-like, waves which will allow for 10 seconds of surfing or whatever your choice of watersport may be. The water will also be thoroughly cleaned in order to make scuba-diving and such possible. And on top it will make for a great piece of pleasant scenery right near the Markthal.

Growing up in Rotterdam I loved the Tropicana swimming pool, so I was sad to see it closed a few years back after some financial troubles (and those good old urban legends about razor blades in the water slide). It has been vacant for a while now as you can see in this amazing video:

Enter Bluecity010 (in case you’re wondering – 010 is the netcode of phonenumbers in Rotterdam) who have just this month purchased Tropicana and are planning to turn it into a circular and sustainable economic hotspot right next to the Maas river. They’re doing this by hosting tens of small companies who have made it their business of turning another business their waste into a fine product, allowing these business to profit from each others waste. A mushroom company is for example using the waste of the next door coffee company to grow their mushrooms on that waste. Smart huh!?

And from the looks of it Rotterdam as a Smart City will be an ongoing story. Not only has Rem Koolhaas signed up signed to finally bring Rotterdam a new Feyenoord Stadium, the city is also looking forward to being the hometown of the Dutch Wind Wheel. Which is perceived to be basically a giant wind wheel/apartmentbuilding/innovative centre and attraction at the same (for more info on this beauty, here).
